In 1995 Allen became interested in photography, by default—he took photographs of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley that excited his friends and from that time he has continued to take photographs on his travels that bring much pleasure to viewers. He did not enter his work into a public venue until 2001, when he submitted Autumn at Sissinghurst to the Alameda County Fair. To his happiness, it received the Fair Directors' Purchase Award. Each year he creates a postcard as a Christmas gift based on one of his favorite photos taken during that year. His work Grand Canyon Sunshine and Shadows is included in the book The Mirror's Reflection, published by the The International Library of Photography in 2003.
